What Is Tagua and Why Is It So Popular?

Hello, Tagua Squad! You might have heard of tagua referred to as "vegetable ivory," a nickname that hints at its texture and ecological benefits. But what exactly is tagua made of, and why is it becoming so popular?

What is Tagua?

Tagua is a hard, ivory-like material derived from the seeds of the Phytelephas, more commonly known as the ivory palm or tagua palm, which is native to the rainforests of South America. The seeds come from inside the fruit of this tree. Once harvested, these seeds undergo a drying process that hardens them into a material very similar to animal ivory.

Eco-Friendly Credentials

The use of tagua supports local economies without contributing to deforestation, as the trees are not harmed during the seed harvest.

The Journey from Nut to Jewelry

Once gathered, the ivory palm seeds are air-dried for several months. As they dry, the seeds harden, eventually resembling true ivory in both look and feel. Artisans then skillfully carve, dye, and polish these seeds into our designs to create the beautiful TAGUA BELLA jewelry collection. These earrings are coming in January!

Why Choose Tagua?

Beyond its sustainable aspects, tagua holds immense aesthetic appeal. It can be easily dyed in a wide array of vibrant colors. Moreover, its natural grain gives each piece a unique charm, ensuring you have a one-of-a-kind item!

A Gem with a Global Impact

As awareness grows, more eco-conscious consumers are embracing tagua. From fashion designers seeking sustainable materials to eco-shops supporting rainforest communities, this material plays a significant role in the larger movement toward sustainability.

Wearing tagua goes beyond style —it’s a small, powerful step towards a more sustainable world.
